9. Tiles
Close to twenty years ago, I explored making mosaics. I never start small. I made a large table for my soon to be fiancé’. One thing led to another and I kept making mosaics which landed me on the set ABC’s “Extreme Makeover Home Edition” exhausting myself during the installation of 4 mosaic bathrooms, a mosaic 8’ table, and mosaic fire-pit in seven days. I kept making mosaics with glass tile, with porcelain tile, with handmade, with Byzantine style, and painted tiles. I shipped mosaics for other people to install in their properties from Alaska to California and New York to Florida. At one point I traveled halfway around the world with my friend to physically see the oldest known mosaic on the planet (at that time) – an ancient map of Jerusalem that is over 2000 years old. Needless to say – I dig tile! They have since found an older mosaic than the one I visited years ago that was under water until the year 2000. When I stop making pottery and tiles, I’ll have to plan a trip to Greece and Turkey to see that one next!
